Chrism Mass - a diocesan celebration

Mar 26, 2018
The Chrism Mass - a diocesan celebration - will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, March 26, 2018 at the Cathedral of the Holy Family in Saskatoon, with Bishop Mark Hagemoen presiding. The Chrism Mass touches the sacramental and worship life of every church in the diocese. Because of this, every parish is invited and encouraged to be present and join in this sacred celebration at the beginning of Holy Week. All are welcome to attend!During the annual Chrism Mass, priests from throughout the diocese will renew their commitment to priestly ministry. The Oil of the Sick (OS), Oil of the Catechumens (OC), and Sacred Chrism (SC) will be blessed. The oils received at the Chrism Mass by parish representatives will then be taken to their respective parishes. The oils blessed at this diocesan celebration are:Oil of Catechumens (OC): This oil, sometimes referred to as Oil of Salvation, is used to anoint the catechumens (infants and unbaptized converts to the Church) in preparation for their initiation into the Church. The prayer accompanying this anointing expresses the desire that Christ strengthen the person being anointed. This oil is also used in celebration of the baptism of children. It is a sign of belonging: marking us as members of the Body of Christ.Oil of the Sick (OS): this oil used in the Anointing of the Sick. The prayer accompanying this anointing is: “Through this holy anointing, may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy spirit. May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up.” This oil is used to bring comfort and support to the sick in their infirmity. The celebrating of the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is a ritual moment that makes visible and present to the sick and the whole community who we are as Church: a community of healing and support.Sacred Chrism: to this oil is added a sweet smelling perfume or balsam. It is used at the celebration of baptism, confirmation, the ordination of priests and bishops, and for the dedication of churches and altars. It is also used in the blessing of bells and sacred vessels. Anointing with this oil implies abundance of grace and dedicated service to God. The word Christ means “anointed one.” So being anointed with oil is a sign of the special and strengthening presence of Christ, the Anointed One.

Are Your Affairs in Order?

Mar 21, 2018
* Are Your Affairs in Order? More than half of Canadians (51%) say they have no “last will and testament” in place (Angus Reid Institute, January 2018) and only 35% say they have one that is up to date. In other words, half of Canadians have no say in what happens to their assets should they die, and the few that have a will haven’t kept them current.  In Saskatchewan, about 58% of people don’t have a will, and if someone dies without a will, the government determines how to distribute their assets.  So why are so many people reluctant to have a will and make it current?  Is there more to estate planning than writing a “Will.”  If you don’t have funeral plans in place, what are the executor's responsibilities and obligations towards a funeral?   What is a health care directive and when should you have one?  Do you have plans in place in case of incapacity?  All of these questions and more will be discussed.  Where: Cathedral of the Holy Family, 123 Nelson Road, Saskatoon, SK  - Bishop Klein RoomWhen: March 20 at 2:30 pm and March 21 at 7:00 pmWho: 18 years and olderRegistration Required:  Seating limited to 50 peopleOptional: Planning Guide available at the presentation ($5.00 - cash or cheque)March 21 @ 7:00 pm: We will have a guest lawyer, John Benesh, B.A., B.Comm., LL.B. from Benesh Bitz & Company to answer some of your questions. There is no cost to attend this event.
