The pilgrimage to the Lady of the Rosary shrine at the church site began in 1932, when the priests of St. Joseph’s Colony under the blessing of Bishop Prudhomme, decided to hold an annual pilgrimage to honour the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Church at Reward was chosen because of its centrality to the colony, and the feast of our Lady of Carmel, July 16th was the annual day pilgrims would gather to celebrate their faith and give thanks to God through the Blessed Virgin Mary. Church bells could be heard a mile away as pilgrims gathered south and north of the shrine to walk in procession together while praying. The Blessed Sacrament was processed to the altar with thousands of flower pedals lining the path. A thunderous chorus of voices, 3000 strong lifted up in praise the closing hymn “Holy God We Praise Thy Name”. A wooden outdoor grotto was built in 1936, and the present shrine altar was built in 1966.
